Storm or tornado damage to your home? Get free estimates from vetted local contractors.
A derecho and multiple tornadoes tore through the Chicago south suburbs on August 11, 2026. If your roof, siding, or trees were damaged, submit one free request and vetted local contractors can reach out — no door-knocking, no pressure.
What happened
On August 11–12, 2026, a derecho with winds near 100 mph and at least five confirmed tornadoes hit the south and southwest suburbs, including Tinley Park, Homewood, Flossmoor, Glenwood, Thornton, Country Club Hills, Lansing, Orland Park, Mokena, Monee, Crete, and parts of northwest Indiana (Munster, Merrillville, Hobart). Over 1,200 homes in Tinley Park alone had some type of damage, with widespread downed trees and power lines.
Wind and hail damage is not always visible from the ground. Roofs, gutters, siding, and AC units all take hits — and unaddressed roof damage leads to leaks, water damage, and mold.
What to do now
- Document damage — photos/video of roofs, siding, downed trees, and debris.
- Report to your insurance promptly; many policies have time limits for claims.
- Make temporary repairs (tarp leaks) to prevent water intrusion — keep all receipts.
- Stay clear of downed power lines and report them to your utility.
- Get a licensed professional to inspect the roof, gutters, siding, and AC before you file.
